The Case for putting Genomic Medicine to work

Cardiologist Eric Topol, director of Scripps Translational Science Institute in La Jolla, is a leading advocate of using a rapidly expanding array of genetic tests to screen patients for drug complications. Topol says that most physicians today don’t take advantage of this new medical advance, but that “someday it is quite likely that pharmacogenomic assessment will become routine for most, if not all, individuals before a medicine is prescribed.” He explored the potential consequences for patients in a commentary published Wednesday 8/18/10 in the journal Science Translational Medicine. He wrote this article explaining his views for the San Diego Union-Tribune.
