Team Clearity Laced-up for America’s Finest City Half Marathon and 5K

Members of Team Clearity gathered at Balboa Park before dawn on Sunday, August 21, to don teal-splashed running shirts and board buses to Cabrillo National Monument, the start of America’s Finest City Half Marathon. Soon after the sun came out, they ran the 13.1 miles back to Balboa Park, where other teammates who had finished the AFC 5K race met them at the finish line with high fives and big hugs.

Sweaty and still pumped with enthusiasm, the 45-member team, friends and family convened at The Clearity Foundation booth near the finish line to celebrate another successful race, grateful for all the moral and financial support from those who helped Team Clearity raise more than $40,000 to support molecular profiling for women with ovarian cancer. This year’s race was particularly significant as we celebrated Clearity Founder Laura Shawver being cancer-free for five years!

Helen Gardner is also surviving ovarian cancer, and she received the top prize this year for her fundraising efforts. Helen’s extraordinary family and friends who are in the fight with her cheered as she crossed the 5K finish line (see related story) and when she and Clearity Executive Director Hillary Theakston were interviewed by a TV reporter. “Team Clearity is a passionate bunch of runners who want to clear a path to a cure for ovarian cancer,” said Laura Shawver, Ph.D., founder of The Clearity Foundation. “We met our fundraising goal this year, making it possible for more women with ovarian cancer to obtain personalized treatments. We want to stop cancer in its tracks so every ovarian cancer patient can keep running!”
